Newton P. Toland

Newton Toland, age 94 of Winnebago, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato. Memorial services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Hope United Methodist Church with Rev. Lee Miller officiating. A time for visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Private family burial will take place at Basey Methodist Cemetery.

Newton was born on April 2, 1929 in Macomb, Illinois to Myron and Bessie (Lovell) Toland. He attended and graduated from Amboy Highschool. Newton then joined the Army National Guard in Mankato. His unit was then activated for the Korean War, and Newton began training at Fort Rucker in Alabama. He went on to attend surgical tech training at Fort Sam Huston in San Antonio. Newt obtained the rank of Army Staff Sergeant. He later returned home and began farming around the Lake Crystal area. On September 15, 1954, Newton married the love of his life, Mary Ann Pruisner in rural Winnebago. The couple settled on the farm outside of Winnebago and began raising their family.

Newton was a member of the American Legion in Lake Crystal, the Farm Bureau, and Hope United Methodist Church. He and Mary were previously members of First United Methodist Church in Winnebago where he taught Sunday School, catechism classes, and was a lay reader. He also helped found the Lord’s Acre Program. Newt liked to listen to music and always kept busy. He enjoyed fishing, farming, and his family.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Mary; children, Bob (Madge) Toland of Winnebago, Ron (Linda) Toland of Winnebago, and Kathy (John) Williams of Goodyear, AZ; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many more nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Grant Toland; sister, Ruth Green; and grandson, Matthew Toland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
