LeRoy James Slama, age 91, of Mankato, passed away on Friday, June 12, 2020 at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.
Due to Covid-19 concerns, a private memorial mass in celebration of LeRoy’s life will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winnebago with Father Andrew Beerman officiating. Inurnment with military honors will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. LeRoy was born on June 30, 1928 in Winnebago to Edward and Theresa (Schluttner) Slama. He attended country school for 8 years before attending and graduating from Winnebago High School. LeRoy enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean War. On April 26, 1968, LeRoy married Marilyn Wilmes at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Kenyon. LeRoy was a life long farmer, and also worked as a purchasing agent for 20 years. Very important in LeRoy’s life was faith, family, country and community.
He was a member of Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Catholic Church Council, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, VFW, and the Korean Veteran’s Chapter. LeRoy enjoyed wood carving and traveling, especially his trips to Spain, Germany, and Hawaii.
LeRoy is survived by his wife, Marilyn; children, Gregory (Christine) Slama of Cedar Rapids, IA, Theresa (Dan) Peters of Kasson, Kathryn (David) Scoggins of White Hall, AR, Jeffery (Linda) Mock of Rochester, and John (Lori) Mock of British Columbia; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren and one due in December.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Arthur, Elmer, Clarence, Lewis, Mary, Marcella, Maurice and great-grandchild Max.
Memorial donations can be made to Diocese of Winona – Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary and Hospice.
