Evelyn Haugh was born on October 18, 1930, the fifth of 13 children born to William and Eldora (Ascheman) Haugh at rural Easton. She was educated in a one room country school for four years, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School in Easton for four years and Delavan High School where she graduated in 1949. For a short time before her marriage, she worked as a receptionist at Interstate Power Company in Winnebago. On October 14, 1950, she married her high school sweetheart, Neal Wallace, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Easton. They farmed in the Delavan, Winnebago, and Kiester areas for nine years before moving to Vernon Center in 1960. She worked as a secretary for the school district for almost 40 years, retiring in 2000, and then worked for Wendlandt Greenhouse each spring for 10 years until 2010. She was active in St Matthew’s Catholic Church and involved in community activities.
Evie was a caring, giving person, showing her love through her baking and cooking. Her sharp memory was her greatest strength, even in her final days, and she was always ready with a forgotten date, name, or historic detail. She took great joy in life’s simple pleasures, repeating daily routines, attending family gatherings, serving at church and community events, and sharing conversations with family and friends. Evie loved her life in Vernon Center and will be dearly missed by those whose lives she touched.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Neal; her children Brian (Cinda), Barb (KC) Foster, and Jason (Jennifer); her grandchildren, James (Kinzie) Wallace, Jared (Robyn) Wallace, Brielle (Jim) Herbst, Brady (Cassie) Foster, Corey Foster, Brynn (Mitchell) Buchanan, Laura (Ben) Young, Rachel (Kevin) Busch, Caleb (Meg) Foster, McKenzie Wallace, Max Wallace, Mason Wallace and 19 great-grandchildren; special family member, Geoff McNulty; siblings Rita Haugh, Charles (Eileen) Haugh, Howard (Nicole) Haugh, Ann (Al) Rath, Katy (Jim) Eiselt; sisters-in-law Patricia Haugh, Marilyn Haugh, Janet Haugh, Irma Haugh and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Charlene, in 2014, her parents, brothers Harold, LeRoy, Bill and Ray Haugh; sisters, Maryce (Bill) Murry, Eileen Haugh, OSF, and Margaret (Karl) Wombacher.
