DANIEL “DAN” GEORGE NICHOLS, age 81, of Rochester, formerly of Winnebago, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2015, at St Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2015, at 11:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church in Winnebago, with Rev. Kathy Blair officiating. Dan was born on August 19, 1933 in Winnebago, MN, the son of Charlotte (Huber) and Harry Nichols of Winnebago, MN. Dan graduated from Winnebago High School in 1952. During and after high school he worked for Verle Lawson Construction. He then became the operator of Standard Oil in Winnebago. In 1953, Dan married Joann Ruth Heinrich of Winnebago. In 1957, they moved to Milaca where Dan was the owner of a Standard Oil Station. In 1959, Dan returned to Winnebago where he operated gas/service stations and then worked for the school district. Retirement years were spent touring the United States with the Holiday Rambler Camping Club, taking two months to travel and site see in Alaska, and then settling in Texas where he enjoyed wood working. In 2013 they decided it was time to leave Texas, moving to Rochester to be closer to family.
Dan is survived by his wife, Joann; five daughters, Nancy (Charles) Lewis of Delavan, Shirley Cumberland of El Mirage, AZ, Susan (Dale) Benson of Forest City, IA, Jean (Darren) McGann of Minnetonka, and Karen (Dan) Hill of Rochester, a special friend Lori (Babcock) Rauk of Forest City, 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and sister, Katharine Anderson of St. Peter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Charlotte Nichols, one grandchild, sister, Marianna Eiselt, brother, David Nichols, and son-in-law, Curt Cumberland
