Melvin E. “Old Dad” Schwieder, age 94, of Amboy, died Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at Oak Lawn Health Care Center, Mankato. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at 3:00 PM, at First Presbyterian Church in Amboy, with Rev. Dawn Carder officiating. Burial will be in Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon Center. Visitation time will be one hour prior to services at the church. Melvin was born December 10, 1919, in Amboy, the son of Gustav and Laura (Hilke) Schwieder. He was raised in Amboy where he graduated from Amboy High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WW II in England where he drove transport for military brass and dignitaries. While there he met and married his wife, Elizabeth M. “Peggy” Elsden on June 2, 1945 in St. Ives Cambs. England. The couple came to Amboy following his service and farmed NW of town. Melvin also delivered milk for the Amboy Creamery before he started working for Pride Seed Corn company, hauling seed. He worked there for many years, retiring in the late 1970’s. Melvin was a 67 year member of the Jennings Post 276 American Legion of Amboy. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, BBQ’er, enjoyed bird watching and camping in state parks throughout the Midwest.
Melvin is survived by his son, Stuart Schwieder of Mankato, son, Dan (Carla) Schwieder of Amboy, granddaughter, Jodi (Dru) Brunson and great granddaughter, Jade Wangsness of Chaska, sister in law, Marjorie (Ron) Spencer of St. Ives Cambs. England and several nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife-Peggy in 2007, sister, Hilda Brush and three brothers: Clarence, Alvin & Gerhardt Schwieder.
