Gladys Mae Hervey, 88, of Winnebago passed away Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Holt Country Care in Rural Byron, MN where she had lived for the past year.
Visitation will be 5-8:00 PM Monday, October 1, 2012 at Spencer-Owen Funeral Home in Winnebago, MN. A funeral service will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Tom Butler officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Winnebago.
Gladys was born on November 24, 1923 in Kenton, Ohio, to Andrew Sr. and Elsie (Osborn) Dunahue. She graduated from Kenton High School. Gladys was trained by the American National Red Cross Volunteer Specal Services for the Nurse’s Aide Corp, Hardin County, Ohio, in 1944, under President Franklin Roosevelt.
Gladys met her brother, Andrew’s, Army buddy and fell in love. She and Russell F. Hervey were married December 2, 1945 in Kenton, Ohio. They returned to Russell’s home where they farmed and raised their family in rural Winnebago, MN.
Gladys loved her country home and community. She was a loving wife, mom, and a dedicated compassionate volunteer her entire life. In 2004 she received the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
Her favorite employment opportunities were Kato Engineering and the Activities Dept at Parker Oaks Communities, Inc. Gladys was a very creative crafter, seamstress, holiday decorator, hostess, and gardener. She was a long time member of the Winnebago United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church, more recently; she actively participated in Women’s Ministries and several mission trips.
Gladys has been a loving mom to Joleta (Wayne) Smith, Rochester, MN, Dwight (Dedra) Hervey, Winnebago, MN, Pam Mathiason, Rochester, MN; grandmother to Aaron Smith, Megan (Jeremy) Fisher, Becky (Travis) Cyphers, Andrew Hervey, Mike Mathiason, Peter (Bridget) Mathiason; great grandchildren Jack, Zane, Addison, Ethan, Lakynn, and Bentley.
She was preceded in death by husband Russell, in 1998, son-in-law Merlin Mathiason, siblings Andrew Jr., Marvin, Pauline, and special sister-in-law, Marvis Randall.
She is survived by siblings Bob (Sandy) and Bernice, sister’s-in-law Marlene and Angeline, and numerous nieces and nephews.
